BeYourOwnPlatform at Figure It Out
Last week I’ve been to Malta where I did a »lecture-performance« titled BeYourOwnGlitchPerformanceWithOthers. It’s basicaly about my research on radical digital online autonomy for musicians that is somewhat gathered under a hashtag #BeYourOwnPlatform. The ’glitch’ part – when I applied it to this symposium – was more about my affinity to certain audio-visual aesthetic, that I wanted to use, and ’with others’ was about my doubts if simply »be your own platfom« isn’t perhaps too individualistic and without enough consideration of community which, I think, is crucial for an artist to be successful in facing their challenges (whatever they are). Today I’m over these doubts, because I feel ’Your Own’ can work for collectives and communities too.
With the lecture-performance I’m pretty happy. I have reworked (again) the text in a way that feels more clear and with better articulation. It already contains a lot of references and quotes, but in this iteration (I did this text already in Prague, Dresden, and Linz in some form) some quotes and narratives are reordered. I added clearer paragraphs of my own. I have improved the processing of live voice through SuperCollider to be more subtle and ongoing as an atmosphere. At the same time the interaction between the live spoken word and sonic-musical processing was not how I imagined it, not quite what I wanted. My intention was to develop it into a more intense »composition« of words and sounds, with variations in density, mood, and amplitude. Maybe I can improve it until the next time I perform it.
You can watch the whole lecture as recorded from a mobile phone (low-to-medium quality), or listen to audio recording (high quality):
In other sonic news, I’m still working on the album – the one with music from the Maja Delak’s »Image Snatchers present Mad Jakale In A Film We Haven’t Seen« - which is now titled »DRAGX̶FUNK« (pronounced something like »drag-a-funk«). The presentation of part of at the end of August got an interesting, I guess quite positive, review at our local independent Radio Študent, and there was at least one more feedback I got from an important local organizer/promotor saying that he heard really good words about it. This kind of finishing line that I’m aproaching feels so hard to reach, and I wonder why. Part of it is that I’ve been working on this music for more than a year (first for the stage, then for the album release), and part of it is, of course, my tendency to procrastinate.
