three streams and getting there
It's always a pleasure to write you a letter reflecting on sound/noise/music activities in the past week. It forces me to evaluate what I've done, what I'm doing, and I can check if I'm on the path I want to be on. The question remains: is it about the journey or about the achievement/goal?
Anyhow, yesterday was also the last day of the month, and I rarely manage to 'catch' it mentally, this time I was able to notice it and reflect on the month. One of the things that I found I was proud of were three live video streams that I did from my studio. What came to me as an interesting question was, since these three streams were all very different (a DJ mix of dancefloor music, a livecoded dark ambient set, and a talkative listening party alias tracks explainer), which form was the most... interesting one? Or perhaps, which form was the one I would be most thrilled to do again?
At the same time, I wonder if those different forms seem a bit confusing to the audience - it's unstable with regards to the expectations. Ah, lovely audience expectations. Of course I guess I can make one form that includes all these different approaches in an accessible way. I wonder if I'm trying to be too 'user friendly' and I'm compromising? No, I think I'm just trying to sort out a vision. There's the point of communication and 'exchange' to be considered. Some things do need to be consistent, unless it's an articulated and thought-out concept of chaos or ambivalence.
Regarding the album, I'm having a bit of anxiety against working on it. I guess I'm slightly fed up with working on it. It's been a long process. I did manage to spent an hour or two relistening to most of it, and looking at the tracklist and evaluating what needs to be really done, and made a list. It looks like this:
- 70% stoj đoni
- 80% aplauso
- 85% just start the funk
- 90% lubricate me
- 90% hočem več
- 95% echoes from magic mike
- 95% ljubo
- 95% heaven
- 95% handy one
- 97% jst ga res ljubim
- 97% minica / kuli ne dela
- 98% tossing lawrence
So most of work need 'stoj đoni', and 'aplauso'. The rest is finishing. This finishing process somewhat scares me a bit. I'm very perfectionistic. I'm probably overthinking it and at some point need to let it go. Just do the mixing and send it away into the mastering, start with the production process of design, the booklet, liner notes, and promotion. The release date is now 5/DECEMBER (Rentgen at Klub GROMKA & Pretok.TV of course). I hope to finish with everything pre-mastering until 16/SEPT, the day before I leave for Malta.
Going back to the topic of live streams, that I did in August, the last one was last Tuesday and was in a form of talkative run-through the DRAGxFUNK tracks I presented at Grounded festival. Here's an short (8minutes!) edit of some bits from the stream (click on image below to watch the video).
But wait, there are some more streams coming up. The first one is already this Friday night (from our clubnight Major Arcana at klub MONOKEL):
That's all for this week. I'll write again very soon!
As always, thank you for your generous support, patience, and being part of The Backstairs Tone journey. I hope next week treats you well! 💚
Yours truly,
