#240721: mad album progress

This Sunday, the highlight of the week is that I made a really good progress with two tracks for the forthcoming Mad Jakale album. Seriously, these two days, yesterday and today, have put me in entirely different mood than weeks before that. You see, I'll share an intimate detail here: one day with my councelor, well, therapist, I realised through our discussions, that I feel the most at peace, the most in-tune with myself, and the most realised and activated, when I make music. When I reach that state of flow, and completely forget about time and surroundings, and musical ideas are right there in front of me, and I'm putting them into the track I'm working on, and it is taking me away but also centering and grounding me, getting me in touch with my self. That music and the processes of making it is a mirror of my desires and wounds. It's the most beautiful moment for me, and it's something I wish I would never loose and never stop doing. I could give up so many other of my activities, but this sits on the top of everything.

So.

This past week?

Last Sunday was a netlabel day. That meant a lot of work but at Kamizdat we managed - thanks to my collaborators and amazing performers. We published a new compilation "Access Frame - Authority", digitally and in a form of a printed 'zine' with download codes. We setup streaming via our own OwnCast server with multiple cameras, sound checks, lights, etc. Program included a "round table" with Set in Stockholm, Konrad in Dresden and myself here in Ljubljana. After that performances by Karmen Ponikvar, Eva Mulej (Oka), Lifecutter, and Kikiriki and myself as a duo. We had some (10-15) audience in the space (Komuna, Kino Šiška) and some (10-15) on the stream. We recorded the stream and it looked very nice.

Next day was a day to return borrowed equipment, down-scale the owncast server, edit the video recordings (stream), and uploading edits as separate performances.

On Tuesday I created fresh FLAC and MP3 formats of the Access Frame: Authority compilation. These files received also careful treatment with tags (this is metadata that an audio file can carry with it so it can present itself with titles and names spelled correctly) including a webcovers.

While next day I was chichatting and having coffees to make connections and catch up with a fellow sound artist, on Thursday we met at our monthly (still not advertised well) TOPLAP(si) meetup. It was six of us and we had no real serious agenda apart from opening up a flok.cc room and jam in it in the second part. And guess what? It worked pretty lovely, as we all kinda joined with each own laptop but still displaying and hearing one and simply played around with numbers and functions - together learning through stress-less play. This is the second time we used flok like this and it's quite remarkable.

I spent part of Friday reading, finishing the second chapter of the Live Coding book, and made quite a lot of notes. I like it how it's written and what issues it tackles.

Oh, another thing: for a month now - since 20/JUN I've been writing short handwritten daily pages on my front page of homeweb prin.lu. It's been quite fun. I've developed not-too-painful workflow where I can sit somewhere with my eINK tablet, write a single page of words in it, and then export it and upload it via my private (next) cloud to publish it. They appear on the front but there's now also a collection of them if you click through.

The tone these past weeks and especially this weekend was about the album I'm working on (I can finally say I AM working on it instead of pushing it aside and delaying, thanks in no small part to Focusmate and my supporting partner) based on music from Mad Jakale performance piece. The album (or rather, its material) will be presented at the Grounded festival on 22.AUG (in one month!) but at that time it will not be public yet but will most probably be just about finished, sent to press, and possibly in a pre-order campaign.

So... the main goodie with this update are these two tracks that I consider about 90% done and that I managed to push forward yesterday and today.

That's all for this week. My hope is that I write an update again on next Sunday, as planned for the The Backstairs Tone.

As always, thank you for your generous support, patience, and being part of The Backstairs Tone journey. I hope next week treats you well! 💚
